The potential sensitivity of the results of the modelling exercise to the definition of the spatial units used is commonly referred to as the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) or the zone definition problem (ZDP). Reviews of the general problem are provided elsewhere [36,17] and there have been investigations, although rather inconclusive, of the problem in other types of spatial modelling. [p. 27]
