Baraff & Witkin's paper does indeed provide a solid framework for cloth simulation. It appears to allow relatively large timesteps, and with suitable optimisation should run quite quickly.
Hopefully, this paper should clear up some of the confusions of both Macri's paper, and the original paper. Implementing Baraff & Witkin's paper should be straightforward using the equations shown here.
